PRESENTATION | Music Sounds Better with You: Building a Better Beat

Growing economic pressures, increased barriers of inaccessibility and new forms of piracy have further disadvantaged the music industry, which often favors established artists and companies while marginalizing emerging talents and diverse voices.

What tools and approaches can be used to build a stronger, more collaborative, equitable, accessible, and open-source ecosystem? In this session, artists, cultural producers, and community organizers will present projects and solutions that envision a brighter future for electronic music, involving alternative business models for community building and innovative pathways from emerging technology towards patronage.

Projects include:

• NUO RANKU IKI AUSU (From Hands to Ears), the winning project of HACKLAB24, a hackathon promoting diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in the digital arts, organized by MUSICMOTION. This multisensory work of audiovisual poetry combines painting, collage, digital art, music, and soundscape, inviting participants to explore compositions with their hand movements detected by Derivative's Touch Designer software and MediaPipe algorithms.
• Vicky B. Ouellette, Director of STUDIO ZX, will present the Ctrl+Alt festival: an initiative for the inclusion of diversity, without compromise. Responding to the need to create a context for dissemination and artistic representation designed by and for local nightlife communities, the Ctrl+Alt Festival aims to offer exposure and visibility opportunities to marginalized artists. By bringing together six event collectives operating in Montreal's underground nightlife scene, STUDIO ZX highlights a rich and nuanced portrait of the city's alternative scenes.
• Montreal bass music producer and DJ Honeydrip (Tiana McLaughlan) will present her work building sound systems as counter cultural practice. Her journey took a significant leap in 2023 when she built her own pair of subwoofers, showcasing her commitment to sound system culture. As a woman running a sound system in Montreal, she operates it through her understanding and appreciation of the historical and cultural contexts of sound system culture. In the modern landscape, it remains at the forefront of countercultural movements, challenging the mainstream and providing a voice to the marginalized.
